Your First AI Conversation

Learn to use ChatGPT and similar AI chatbots — how to ask questions, get helpful answers, and have a natural conversation with AI for the first time.

Talking to AI

Think of ChatGPT as a very knowledgeable assistant who’s available 24 hours a day, never gets impatient, and is happy to answer any question — from “What’s a good recipe for leftover chicken?” to “Help me write a birthday card for my granddaughter” to “Explain what my doctor meant by ’elevated cholesterol.'”

The best part? You don’t need to learn any special language. You just type (or speak) the way you’d talk to another person.

Getting Started with ChatGPT

Step 1: Open ChatGPT

  • Go to chat.openai.com on your phone, tablet, or computer
  • You can use it for free without creating an account (basic features)
  • For more features, create a free account with your email

Step 2: Type Your First Question

In the text box at the bottom, type something simple:

What's the weather like in [your city] today?

Press Enter (or tap the send button). The AI will respond in a few seconds.

Step 3: Have a Conversation

You don’t have to ask just one question and stop. You can keep going:

You: "What's a good indoor activity for a rainy day?"
AI: [suggests several activities]
You: "Tell me more about the crossword puzzles option."
AI: [gives more detail about crossword puzzles]
You: "Where can I find free crossword puzzles online?"
AI: [recommends websites]

Quick Check: Why is it useful that AI remembers what you said earlier in the conversation? Because you can build on previous answers without repeating yourself. If you asked about dinner recipes and then say “Make that vegetarian instead,” AI knows you’re talking about the recipe it just suggested. This makes the conversation feel natural and efficient.

How to Ask Good Questions

The secret to getting great answers from AI is the same secret to getting great answers from people: be specific.

Vague Question (Okay)Specific Question (Much Better)
“Tell me about Paris”“What are the best things to do in Paris for someone who walks slowly and loves art?”
“Write me a letter”“Write a thank-you letter to my neighbor who brought me soup when I was sick”
“What’s healthy to eat?”“What are easy breakfast options that are good for someone watching their blood sugar?”

The Formula for Great Questions

Tell AI:

  1. What you need — a recipe, a letter, advice, an explanation
  2. Your situation — what you have, who it’s for, any limits
  3. Your preference — simple language, formal tone, short answer

Example:

I need to write an email to my doctor's office
asking to schedule my annual physical.
I want it to be polite and brief.
My doctor's name is Dr. Martinez.

Things to Try Right Now

Here are five questions to practice with. Try them on ChatGPT:

  1. Recipe help: “I have eggs, cheese, and spinach. What can I make for breakfast?”
  2. Letter writing: “Write a short birthday message for my friend who turns 75 next week. Her name is Margaret and she loves gardening.”
  3. Explanation: “Explain what a podcast is in simple terms.”
  4. Planning: “I’m driving from Chicago to Nashville. What are interesting stops along the way?”
  5. Advice: “What are some easy exercises I can do at home to help with stiff knees?”

Quick Check: What should you do if AI’s answer is too complicated? Ask it to simplify. You can say “Explain that like I’m a beginner” or “Can you use simpler words?” or “Give me the short version.” AI is patient and happy to rephrase. You’re never bothering it — it’s designed to help.

What AI Is Good At (And What It’s Not)

AI Does WellAI Struggles With
Answering factual questionsKnowing what happened today (it may not have the latest news)
Writing letters, emails, and messagesGiving medical or legal advice (always check with professionals)
Explaining complex topics simplyBeing 100% accurate about everything
Suggesting recipes, activities, plansUnderstanding sarcasm or very personal context
Helping you brainstorm ideasReplacing the judgment of people who know you

Important rule: AI is a helpful starting point, not the final word. For medical questions, financial decisions, or legal matters, always confirm with a professional.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT works like a conversation — ask a question, get an answer, ask follow-ups
  • Specific questions get much better answers than vague ones — include details about your situation
  • You can ask AI to simplify, rephrase, or try again — it never gets impatient
  • Never share sensitive personal information (Social Security number, bank details, passwords) with AI
  • AI is a helpful starting point, not a replacement for professional medical, legal, or financial advice

Up Next: You’ll learn to use voice assistants — Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant — for hands-free help with reminders, weather, music, and daily tasks.

Knowledge Check

1. You ask ChatGPT, 'What should I have for dinner?' and get a vague answer. How can you get a more helpful response?

2. ChatGPT gives you an answer that doesn't seem quite right. What should you do?

3. What personal information should you NEVER share with ChatGPT or similar AI chatbots?
