The Data Drowning Problem
In the previous lesson, we explored customer journey mapping and optimization. Now let’s build on that foundation. Modern marketers don’t lack data. They’re drowning in it. Website analytics. Email metrics. Social engagement. Ad performance. CRM data. Revenue numbers. Customer surveys.
The problem isn’t data. It’s insight. You have 47 dashboards and can’t answer the basic question: “Is our marketing working?”
AI transforms this equation. Not by adding more dashboards, but by synthesizing data across sources and surfacing the insights that matter. “Your email sequence is driving 3x more trials than paid ads at 1/10th the cost” is more useful than 47 dashboards.
The Metric Hierarchy
Not all metrics are equal. Here’s how to organize them:

North Star: Revenue from marketing-sourced customers. Everything else serves this.
Business metrics: Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), Lifetime Value (LTV), payback period. These tell you if marketing is profitable.
Campaign metrics: Conversion rate, cost per acquisition, campaign ROI. These tell you which campaigns work.
Activity metrics: Email opens, click rates, page views, social engagement. These tell you if execution is on track—but they don’t tell you if marketing is working.
The mistake most marketers make: reporting on activity metrics (bottom of hierarchy) and assuming they reflect business results (top of hierarchy). “We got 10,000 blog views!” sounds great until you learn that zero of those visitors became customers.

Your email open rate dropped from 22% to 18%. What do you do?

The answer is B. A drop in open rate has many possible causes—list growth, deliverability issues, subject line fatigue, or seasonal patterns. Diagnose before you treat.
Attribution: What’s Actually Working?
Attribution is the hardest problem in marketing analytics. A customer reads your blog, clicks a LinkedIn ad, opens three emails, then signs up through Google search. Who gets credit?
