## The First Principles Process

### Step 1: Define the Problem
What are you actually trying to solve?

### Step 2: List Your Assumptions
What do you believe is true about this situation?

### Step 3: Question Each Assumption
- Is this really true?
- Why do I believe this?
- What if this weren't true?

### Step 4: Identify Fundamental Truths
What remains after questioning everything?

### Step 5: Build Up From Basics
Given only the fundamentals, what solutions are possible?

## Elon Musk's Battery Example

CONVENTIONAL: "Batteries cost $600/kWh. That's just what they cost."

FIRST PRINCIPLES:
- What are batteries made of? (Materials)
- What do those materials cost on commodity markets? (~$80/kWh)
- Why the gap? (Manufacturing, supply chain, margins)
- Can we close that gap? (Build own factory, optimize)

Result: Tesla batteries now cost a fraction of competitors.

## Questions to Challenge Assumptions

- "Says who?"
- "Why must it be this way?"
- "What would we do if we were starting fresh?"
- "What would a newcomer with no history do?"
- "What if we had unlimited resources? Limited resources?"
- "What are we optimizing for? Should we be?"
