## What Is a Premortem?

Unlike a postmortem (analyzing after failure), a premortem imagines the project has already failed and asks "why?"

Created by psychologist Gary Klein, it counters optimism bias and surfaces risks people are afraid to voice.

## The Premortem Process

### Step 1: Assume Failure
"It's [date in future]. The project has completely failed. It was a disaster."

### Step 2: Generate Reasons
"Write down every reason why it failed."
- No censoring
- The more specific, the better
- Include uncomfortable truths

### Step 3: Categorize Risks
Group by:
- Technical/execution
- People/team
- External factors
- Resources/timeline
- Communication

### Step 4: Assess and Prioritize
For each risk:
- Likelihood (1-5)
- Impact (1-5)
- Detectability (how early will we know?)

### Step 5: Mitigate
For high-priority risks:
- Preventive actions
- Early warning signs
- Contingency plans
