OpenEvidence for Bedside Nurses
Set up OpenEvidence — the free, HIPAA-safe clinical AI used at Mount Sinai — in 30 minutes. 8 shift-ready lessons, free start, certificate included.
Every RN I know has typed a clinical question into ChatGPT. “Can I push this med with that one?” “What’s the Braden cutoff for high-risk?” “Is the lactate going the wrong direction on this sepsis patient?” And every RN I know has also had that half-second of panic wondering whether the hospital’s IT team can see the chat.
There’s a better tool. It’s free. It’s built for clinicians. Mount Sinai embedded it in their Epic system on March 31, 2026. And unlike consumer ChatGPT, it cites every answer and refuses to make things up when the evidence is thin.
This course is the 30-minute setup plus 90 minutes of real shift practice that gets OpenEvidence off “thing I heard about” and onto your phone before your next shift.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a registered nurse to take this course?
The lessons are framed for US-licensed RNs (ICU, med-surg, ED, peds), but the same workflow applies to NPs, PAs, and nursing students on clinical rotation. OpenEvidence's NPI sign-up currently requires a US NPI number.
Is OpenEvidence really free?
Yes — free for all US clinicians with an NPI. It's funded by enterprise contracts (Mount Sinai Epic integration, March 31 2026) and investors, not by user fees. No credit card, no trial expiration.
Why not just use ChatGPT for the same questions?
Two reasons. One, ChatGPT's consumer tier is not HIPAA-compliant and your chats may be used to train future models. Two, ChatGPT invents citations — OpenEvidence is trained on peer-reviewed journals and refuses to answer when evidence is thin. Lesson 5 shows the side-by-side.
How long does the setup actually take?
Under 5 minutes if you already know your NPI number (most nurses do). If you need to look it up, add 2 minutes. Lesson 2 walks you through both paths.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. Complete all 8 lessons and the capstone reflection and you'll earn a verifiable OpenEvidence for Bedside Nurses certificate (prefix OEN-XXXXXX). Add it to your LinkedIn or nursing portfolio.
