Every RN I know has typed a clinical question into ChatGPT. “Can I push this med with that one?” “What’s the Braden cutoff for high-risk?” “Is the lactate going the wrong direction on this sepsis patient?” And every RN I know has also had that half-second of panic wondering whether the hospital’s IT team can see the chat.

There’s a better tool. It’s free. It’s built for clinicians. Mount Sinai embedded it in their Epic system on March 31, 2026. And unlike consumer ChatGPT, it cites every answer and refuses to make things up when the evidence is thin.

This course is the 30-minute setup plus 90 minutes of real shift practice that gets OpenEvidence off “thing I heard about” and onto your phone before your next shift.

What You'll Learn

  • Sign up for OpenEvidence using your NPI number in under 5 minutes
  • Run 5 shift-scenario queries that return peer-reviewed, NEJM-cited answers
  • Recognize the 5 situations where you should still call your preceptor instead
  • Save and re-use OpenEvidence answers in a personal shift-handoff workflow
  • Explain the HIPAA difference between OpenEvidence and consumer ChatGPT to a coworker
  • Compare consumer AI, enterprise AI, and clinical AI tools for bedside decision support

After This Course, You Can

Look up peer-reviewed answers to shift-critical clinical questions in 30 seconds instead of 20-minute UpToDate detours
Stop exposing yourself and your hospital to the HIPAA risk of typing patient data into consumer ChatGPT
Add a verifiable AI certificate to your resume that hospital educators and charge nurses actually recognize
Build a personal shift library of cited answers you can pull up again for similar patients
Coach newer nurses on the right way to use AI at the bedside — without sounding like a compliance scold

What You'll Build

Personal Shift Reference Library
A saved, organized set of your own OpenEvidence answers for the 10 clinical scenarios you see most often — sepsis bundles, pressure-ulcer staging, peds dosing conversions, postpartum BPs, ESRD antibiotic adjustments.
5-Minute Shift Handoff Template
A printable SBAR-ready handoff template that pulls OpenEvidence citations into your shift report — so the oncoming nurse sees your clinical reasoning, not just the task list.
OpenEvidence for Bedside Nurses Certificate
A verifiable credential proving you can apply OpenEvidence to shift clinical questions, recognize its limits, and maintain HIPAA-safe AI practice at the bedside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a registered nurse to take this course?

The lessons are framed for US-licensed RNs (ICU, med-surg, ED, peds), but the same workflow applies to NPs, PAs, and nursing students on clinical rotation. OpenEvidence's NPI sign-up currently requires a US NPI number.

Is OpenEvidence really free?

Yes — free for all US clinicians with an NPI. It's funded by enterprise contracts (Mount Sinai Epic integration, March 31 2026) and investors, not by user fees. No credit card, no trial expiration.

Why not just use ChatGPT for the same questions?

Two reasons. One, ChatGPT's consumer tier is not HIPAA-compliant and your chats may be used to train future models. Two, ChatGPT invents citations — OpenEvidence is trained on peer-reviewed journals and refuses to answer when evidence is thin. Lesson 5 shows the side-by-side.

How long does the setup actually take?

Under 5 minutes if you already know your NPI number (most nurses do). If you need to look it up, add 2 minutes. Lesson 2 walks you through both paths.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. Complete all 8 lessons and the capstone reflection and you'll earn a verifiable OpenEvidence for Bedside Nurses certificate (prefix OEN-XXXXXX). Add it to your LinkedIn or nursing portfolio.
