Anthropic just shipped the AI-in-Word feature that Microsoft Copilot should have been. Claude for Word landed in beta on April 11, 2026 — a real sidebar add-in that reads your full document, tracks every edit as a native Word change, and clicks citations back to the source paragraph.
But there’s a catch. It’s Team and Enterprise only for now. If you’re on Pro, you’re on a waitlist. Everyone else can install it today in about five minutes.
Here’s the full install flow for Mac, Windows, and Word on the web, what to do when the add-in doesn’t appear (the #1 first-week complaint), and how it actually stacks up against Copilot.
What Claude for Word Actually Does
Three things, all document-aware:
- Drafts, edits, and rewrites inside your document. Every change shows up as a native Word tracked change — the same thing your editor would do, just faster.
- Answers questions about the document with clickable citations that jump you to the exact paragraph.
- Handles comment threads. Leave a comment for Claude, it edits the anchored text and responds in the thread.
And it talks to Claude for Excel and PowerPoint when you have multiple Office documents open. One conversation, three apps.
Artificial Lawyer called legal contract redline “the first use case Anthropic is pushing,” and it shows — the tracked-changes workflow maps perfectly to how lawyers and editors actually review documents.
Who Can Install It Today
Plan matters more than platform. Here’s the breakdown:
| Claude plan | Can install Claude for Word? |
|---|---|
| Free | No — not available |
| Pro ($20/mo) | No — waitlist |
| Max ($100 / $200/mo) | ❌ Not yet — see note below |
| Team ($25/seat/mo) | ✅ Yes |
| Enterprise | ✅ Yes |
The Max plan weirdness everyone’s mad about: Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint both run on Max. Claude for Word doesn’t. Nobody at Anthropic has publicly explained why. Max subscribers paying $200/month are the angriest group online — and with good reason. If you’re on Max, join the waitlist and expect this to change within weeks, not months.
So if you’re on Pro or Free, the current path is upgrading to Team (minimum 5 seats) or waiting. No “just for me” workaround exists yet.
For the rest of this guide, I’ll assume you’re on Team or Enterprise.
System Requirements
Before you start, make sure you’re on a supported Word version:
| Platform | Minimum Version |
|---|---|
| Word for the web | Any current version |
| Word for Windows | Microsoft 365, Version 2205 or newer |
| Word for Mac | Version 16.61 or newer |
On Windows, check your version under File → Account → About Word. On Mac, it’s Word → About Microsoft Word. If you’re on 2021 or older, you’ll need to upgrade to Microsoft 365 first.
Option 1: Individual Install (the 2-Minute Path)
This is the path for a solo user on Team whose admin hasn’t blocked Office Store access.
Step 1: Open Word (desktop or web).
Step 2: Go to the add-ins gallery.
- Windows: Click Home → Add-ins (right side of the ribbon)
- Mac: Click Tools → Add-ins
- Word on the web: Click Home → Add-ins
Step 3: Search for Claude by Anthropic for Word.
Step 4: Click Add (or Get It Now if you’re going through AppSource). You can also go straight to the marketplace listing at marketplace.microsoft.com.
Step 5: Accept the permissions. Word asks whether to trust the add-in — say yes.
Step 6: The Claude sidebar appears on the right. Click Sign in. Use the same email you use for claude.ai — personal account if your Team was set up with personal emails, SSO if your org uses it.
Step 7: That’s it. Type your first prompt in the sidebar.
A good first test: open an existing document, highlight a paragraph, and type “rewrite this for clarity, preserve the numbering.” Watch the tracked change land.
Option 2: Org-Wide Admin Deploy
If you’re the Microsoft 365 admin rolling Claude for Word to your team, skip the individual route. Central deployment means nobody has to install anything themselves.
Step 1: Go to admin.microsoft.com.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings → Integrated apps → Add-ins.
Step 3: Click Get apps → search Claude by Anthropic for Word → Deploy.
Step 4: Pick your deployment scope:
- Entire organization — everyone gets it
- Specific users/groups — pilot with legal team first, then expand
- Just me — test before rolling out
Step 5: Confirm. Deployment takes a few minutes, but full propagation can take up to 24 hours. Users don’t need to restart Word.
Alternative: Manifest XML Deploy
If your org has “Let users access the Office Store” turned off (common in regulated industries), the standard deploy won’t work. Anthropic ships a custom manifest XML for this case:
Step 1: Download the manifest XML from Anthropic’s admin page.
Step 2: In the M365 Admin Center → Settings → Integrated apps → Upload custom apps.
Step 3: Select Office Add-in → I have a manifest file on this device.
Step 4: Upload the XML, pick deployment scope, review, deploy.
This gets Claude for Word to your users without ever exposing them to the Office Store.
Fixing “The Add-in Doesn’t Show Up”
The #1 first-week install problem: you install Claude for Word, but it never appears in Word. Here’s every reason this happens and how to fix it.
Fix 1: Your admin disabled Office Store access
Most likely cause here. Many orgs block the Office Store by default because random add-ins are a security headache. And most IT admins never think to unblock it for approved tools.
Check: Admin Center → Settings → Org Settings → User owned apps and services. Is “Let users access the Office Store” toggled on?
Fix: Either turn it on, or use the manifest XML deploy (above).
Fix 2: You’re on the wrong Claude plan
The add-in installs fine. But when you try to sign in, it silently fails. That’s the Pro/Free case — the account exists, but it doesn’t have Claude for Word permission.
Check: Log in to claude.ai → Settings → Plan. Does it say Team or Enterprise?
Fix: Upgrade or wait for rollout. No workaround.
Fix 3: Word is out of date
Word on Windows before Version 2205 doesn’t support the modern add-in framework Claude uses. Mac Word before 16.61 has the same issue.
Check: File → Account → About Word (Windows), or Word → About Microsoft Word (Mac).
Fix: Update Microsoft 365. If you’re on a perpetual Office license (2021 or older), you’ll need to move to M365 — the add-in won’t install on perpetual licenses.
Fix 4: Stale cache
Sometimes the add-in installs but Word’s cache still thinks it’s not there. Classic Microsoft.
Fix: Close all Word windows completely, reopen, wait 60 seconds. If that doesn’t work, sign out of Word entirely (File → Account → Sign out), then sign back in.
Fix 5: Temporary propagation delay
Admin deploys can take up to 24 hours to fully propagate across Microsoft’s infrastructure. If you deployed in the last few hours, just wait.
Fix: Patience. Come back tomorrow.
Fix 6: You upgraded from Pro to Team and can’t sign in
This one’s specific and tricky. If you were on Claude Pro, then upgraded to Team, the Word sidebar sometimes grabs your old Pro session when you try to authenticate — which fails silently.
A Japanese lawyer posted the workaround on X that actually works:
- In your browser, log out of the Pro account completely.
- Log into your Team account in your main browser.
- Go back to Word → click Claude in the sidebar → it generates an auth code.
- The browser (now signed into Team) authorizes it.
Essentially: make sure the browser session is Team, not Pro, before authorizing. Anthropic hasn’t documented this anywhere, but it’s the fix.
Features Walk-Through
Once you’re in, here’s what each feature actually does and how to trigger it.
Tracked Changes (the killer feature)
Highlight a paragraph, type “rewrite this in plainer language” in the sidebar. Claude returns the edit as a native Word tracked change — same red strikethrough and underline you’d see from a human reviewer. Accept or reject per change, or accept all at once.
And that’s the single reason this add-in is better than copy-pasting from chat.
Clickable Citations
Ask “what does this contract say about termination rights?” and Claude answers with inline citations like (§4.2) that jump you to that section when you click. Works across 50+ page documents. The citation itself is a live reference, not a number Claude made up — if it can’t find the section, it says so.
Comment Thread Resolution
Leave a Word comment like “Claude, please tighten this paragraph while keeping the numbered list intact.” Claude makes the edit, then replies in the thread explaining what it changed. Your edits and its replies all live inside the document’s comment history — no external chat to copy between.
Template Filling
If your document uses consistent formatting (legal contracts, research papers, financial memos), Claude notices. Ask “draft a new section in the same style as section 3” and the output inherits the heading hierarchy, list formatting, and tone.
Semantic Navigation
Word’s built-in find is keyword-based. But Claude finds concepts. “Where do we address force majeure?” works even if the document never uses that exact phrase.
Cross-App with Excel and PowerPoint
Open all three Office apps with Claude sidebars. The same conversation thread can pull data from Excel, narrative from Word, and push an outline into PowerPoint. You don’t need to copy-paste between them.
Redline Summarization
Receive a contract back from a counterparty with their tracked changes? Ask “summarize what they changed and which changes materially affect our obligations.” Claude analyzes the redline and gives you the 5-bullet version. Saves you reading hour.
What This Costs Compared to Copilot
Everyone’s question: is this better than Microsoft Copilot for Word, which comes bundled with M365 Copilot for $30/user/month?
| Dimension | Claude for Word | Copilot for Word |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | $25/seat/mo (Team plan) | $30/user/mo (M365 Copilot) |
| Document awareness | Full document, semantic | Local paragraph + some context |
| Tracked changes | Native Word revisions | Inline suggestions |
| Clickable citations | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Comment thread handling | ✅ Claude replies in thread | Limited |
| Cross-app (Excel, PPT) | ✅ One thread across apps | ✅ Inside each app separately |
| Long-document Q&A | Strong on 50+ pages | Weaker on long docs |
| Install effort | Add-in install | Enabled if you have M365 Copilot license |
Honest read: Copilot has the inline autocomplete advantage — it suggests as you type, which Claude doesn’t do. But for deep document work (legal redline, research synthesis, long-document Q&A), Claude wins almost every time. Users who’ve tried both keep saying the same thing on X: Copilot’s suggestions “break everything,” Claude’s tracked changes preserve formatting cleanly. One post that captured the mood from launch week: “Anthropic just ate Microsoft’s lunch in Microsoft’s own product.”
If you regularly work with 30+ page documents and cite specific sections, Claude wins. If you want autocomplete on emails and short docs, Copilot is fine. For most knowledge workers who spend real time in Word, Claude for Word is the upgrade.
What It Can’t Do (Yet)
Being honest: the beta has limits.
- No Free or Pro access. This one stings. Individual users who want to try it are blocked entirely.
- Word desktop only. Word on the web works too, but the Word iOS and Android apps aren’t supported.
- No offline mode. Every request hits Anthropic’s servers. Corporate networks blocking external AI endpoints will break the add-in.
- Data residency is still Anthropic’s servers by default. Enterprise customers can route through Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex, or Microsoft Foundry — but that requires IT setup.
- No bulk document processing. One doc at a time in the sidebar. For batch jobs, you still need Claude for Excel or the API.
What This Means for You
If you’re a lawyer or paralegal: This is the upgrade. Claude for Word’s tracked-changes workflow and clickable citations are specifically designed for contract review. Ask your firm’s IT to enable it on Team — it’s $25/seat/month. Compare that to what a junior associate costs per hour.
If you’re a researcher or academic writer: The citation workflow changes how you handle literature reviews. Ask Claude “where does this paper discuss sample size” across a 60-page PDF converted to Word, and you’ll get clickable answers. Just double-check the citations — always.
If you’re on Pro personally and hate that you’re blocked: Join the waitlist at claude.com/claude-for-word. Anthropic has said Pro access is coming. In the meantime, the web version of Claude does most of this work through file uploads — not as elegant, but functional.
If you’re a Microsoft 365 admin: Start a pilot with your legal or research team. Deploy via manifest XML if you’ve locked down the Office Store (most regulated industries have). Full rollout takes about 24 hours to propagate, so plan your enablement comms accordingly.
If you’ve never used AI at work before: This is actually a good entry point. Word is familiar. The tracked-changes workflow means AI suggestions never surprise you — you see every edit before it’s real. Try it on one document, accept the good, reject the rest.
The Bottom Line
Claude for Word is the first AI-in-Word add-in that actually uses Word the way editors use Word. Tracked changes, clickable citations, comment thread replies — these aren’t gimmicks, they’re the tools real document workflows run on.
The install is 5 minutes on Team or Enterprise. The “add-in not appearing” problem is real but fixable in all cases. If you’re stuck on Pro, you’re stuck until Anthropic widens access.
For lawyers, researchers, and anyone who actually lives in Word, this is the upgrade you’ve been waiting for.
