What Is Intelligent UI? ChatGPT's Interactive Answers (2026)

Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT answer with calculators, charts, forms and diagrams you can use in the chat. What it is, how it works, and what to check.

TL;DR. Intelligent UI is OpenAI’s name for ChatGPT answering with interactive screens, such as calculators, charts, forms and diagrams, instead of only text. It reached paid plans on October 7, 2026 and Free and Go plans from October 8 (OpenAI). It is a presentation layer, so check the numbers underneath.

For most of ChatGPT’s life, every answer came back in the same shape: a column of text. On October 7, 2026, OpenAI changed that. Its launch post says the new GPT-6 model in ChatGPT can “answer quickly with fully interactive user interfaces,” and it describes the audience as “more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week.” Ask how a savings plan grows, and the answer can be a small calculator with sliders. Ask how a bicycle works, and it can be a diagram where you tap each part.

Intelligent UI is the name OpenAI gave to this capability: a feature of GPT-6 in the Chat tab that lets the model compose an answer from text, visuals and interactive elements, choosing the mix that fits your question. In plain terms: ChatGPT stopped being only a writer and started being able to hand you a small tool. This page, part of the FindSkill.ai glossary, explains what it is, how it works, how it differs from similar features, and what it means for your work.

Why Intelligent UI matters now

Intelligent UI matters because it changes what a chatbot answer is. Until now, an answer was something you read and then carried to a spreadsheet, a calculator or a chart tool. With Intelligent UI the answer can be the tool, which shortens the path from a question to a decision, and which also makes a wrong answer look more convincing.

Here is what the sources say about the rollout:

  • It started with paid plans, then free. According to OpenAI’s release note, the rollout “starts globally today for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise in the Chat tab, and expands to Free and Go starting tomorrow,” with GPT-6 Sol on paid plans and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go (OpenAI Help Center, October 7, 2026).
  • It does not cost extra. OpenAI’s help article states that “Intelligent UI has no separate usage quota. Existing model, tool, and plan allowances still apply” (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026).
  • It is not everywhere. It works from Instant through Extra High reasoning, but the Pro reasoning option, powered by GPT-6 Astra, “doesn’t support Intelligent UI,” and the models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex are unchanged (OpenAI, October 7, 2026).
  • It is not new to the industry. The Decoder noted that Google shipped a similar feature in Gemini in May 2026 under the name Neural Expressive (The Decoder, October 7, 2026).
  • Nobody has published an accuracy audit. I found no published validation of the generated calculators, and WIRED’s hands-on, as I could confirm it, was a short qualitative try-out rather than a test of formulas.
Same question, two kinds of answer
Before: a text answer
Read it, then rebuild it
A paragraph or table of numbers. To change an input you ask again or copy the figures into a spreadsheet.
Good when the answer is a fact
Now: an interactive answer
Adjust it in the chat
Sliders, buttons or a chart you can change. The answer updates as you move an input.
Good when the answer is a what-if

How Intelligent UI actually works

Intelligent UI works by assembling each interactive answer from a fixed set of building blocks that OpenAI made in advance, not by writing a new app from scratch. GPT-6 decides which blocks the question needs, such as a slider, a chart, a form or a button, and arranges them while it is still writing the answer, so the screen appears piece by piece.

OpenAI describes it this way: it built “a library of native, streamable components, along with a compiler that processes the interface as the model generates it.” In plain terms, think of a box of standard parts. The model chooses and arranges the parts, the compiler turns the arrangement into something you can touch, and it does so as the words arrive, which is why you do not wait for a finished page.

From your question to an interactive answer
You ask a question no special prompt needed
GPT-6 picks a format text, table, chart, form, tool
Components are chosen from OpenAI's library
A compiler builds the screen while the answer streams in
You adjust and ask follow-ups numbers update in place
A simplified picture based on OpenAI's description. The model chooses the format per question, and sometimes the right format is plain text.

Two limits follow from that design. First, ChatGPT can only build what the component library supports, and OpenAI says “there’s still work ahead to improve the model’s design judgment and expand what it can create.” Second, the interface is the display, not the math. Whatever calculation sits behind a slider was still produced by the model, which is why the checking habits later on this page matter.

A related feature arrives in the same release: GPT-6 “can also begin answering while it continues to think or use tools, then add more findings without another prompt.” OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That figure measures when the answer starts, not how long the whole answer takes.

Intelligent UI vs Claude Artifacts vs generative UI

Intelligent UI is one example of a wider idea often called generative UI, where an AI model produces part of the interface instead of only the words. It differs from Claude Artifacts in what you get to keep: Artifacts produces an object beside the chat that you can inspect and share, while Intelligent UI shapes the answer inside the chat.

The practical rule: use Intelligent UI to explore a what-if quickly, and use an inspectable route, such as Artifacts or a spreadsheet, for anything you will keep, share or rely on. Inspectable code is not automatically correct, but it gives you something to check. Our guide to Claude Live Artifacts shows what that route looks like.

Where Intelligent UI shows up in real work

Intelligent UI shows up wherever an answer has a number you might want to change, a choice you might want to compare, or a concept you might want to poke at. OpenAI’s own examples cluster in three groups: everyday planning, learning, and small tools you ask for by name.

Use caseWho uses itWhat it looks likeWatch out for
Planning with an unknown numberAnyone hosting, budgeting, travellingA plan with a guest-count or budget control; quantities updateCheck the units and portions it assumes
Savings and loan what-ifsIndividuals, small business ownersA calculator with sliders for amount, years and rateCompounding, fees and inflation assumptions
Break-even and pricingSmall business owners, freelancersA calculator for price, cost and fixed costsMargin versus markup, rounding units down
Explaining a conceptStudents, teachersAn interactive diagram you can tap or adjustA tidy diagram can still be wrong
Bill splittingAnyoneA splitter built from a receipt photoTax and tip arithmetic
Side-by-side comparisonsBuyers, managersA comparison table or panelSources for the numbers shown

Plan and device rules also matter. Intelligent UI appears on the web and updated apps, not in the older macOS and Windows desktop apps, and not at the Pro reasoning option. Always check OpenAI’s current help page; this feature is days old, and details will move.

What this means for small business owners

For a small business owner, Intelligent UI turns “I should work out my break-even point” from a spreadsheet project into a one-paragraph request. The SBA gives the formula: fixed costs divided by price minus variable cost per unit gives break-even units (U.S. Small Business Administration). ChatGPT can now build a calculator around it.

The risk is the formula, not the interface. The classic mistakes are mixing up markup and margin, leaving out a variable cost such as card fees, and rounding units down. A 40% markup on a $7 cost gives a $9.80 price and only a 28.6% margin, while a 40% margin gives $11.67. A tool that quietly picks the wrong one costs you money on every sale.

Ask for the formula and every assumption in plain text, enter a case you already know the answer to, and recalculate in a spreadsheet before you put a real number in front of a customer. We walk through a full worked example in Build a Break-Even Calculator in ChatGPT (and Check It), and the Small Business and Solopreneurs courses cover putting AI to work across a business.

What this means for teachers

For teachers, Intelligent UI means an explanation can become something students adjust. OpenAI’s launch post shows interactive explanations of topics such as the central limit theorem and the Monty Hall problem, where you “change an input to see what happens, or work through a problem step by step.”

That is useful for building intuition, and it is where over-trust is easiest. A diagram can look authoritative and still contain an error, so a teacher’s job shifts from “produce the explainer” to “check the explainer before students see it.” Pick a concept you know well, ask for the interactive version, and test whether it teaches it correctly. It builds directly on the earlier ChatGPT STEM visuals we covered in our study mode guide. The Teachers and Educators course covers classroom workflows with AI.

What this means for accountants and bookkeepers

For accountants and bookkeepers, Intelligent UI is a demonstration tool, not a ledger. It can build an editable chart or a what-if calculator you walk a client through, but it does not connect to your books through this feature, and its output is not an accounting record.

The two cautions are accuracy and confidentiality. On accuracy, research on AI-generated spreadsheet formulas concludes they cannot be assumed trustworthy and need inspection (arXiv, 2024), and a study of a clinical calculator chatbot found that wiring it to verified calculators removed calculation errors yet left overall accuracy below 100% (arXiv, 2025). On confidentiality, individual ChatGPT plans can use conversations to improve models unless you opt out, while Business and Enterprise content is not used by default (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Treat any client number you type as sent to OpenAI, and anonymize first. Our Accountants and Finance course and the Advanced Data Analysis with AI course go deeper on working with numbers safely.

What this means for developers

For developers, Intelligent UI is a user-facing ChatGPT feature, not an API you can call. OpenAI’s launch post and help article describe it for the Chat tab; they do not describe a developer interface, and the models behind Work and Codex are unchanged by this release.

What it does change is the benchmark users will hold your own AI products to. If a chat answer can render a slider and a chart, a plain text reply in your app starts to look dated. The architecture OpenAI describes, a fixed component library plus a streaming renderer, is also a useful pattern: constrain the model to a vetted set of components so its output stays predictable and safe to render. Our Developers course covers building with AI APIs, and Data Visualization covers choosing the right chart for the job.

What this means for freelancers

For freelancers, Intelligent UI is a quick way to work out a sustainable rate. A rate calculator with “billable hours per week” as its own control exposes the hidden variable: if you want a full 40-hour week at $50 an hour ($2,000) but only 24 of those hours are billable, the rate has to be $2,000 divided by 24, or $83.33 an hour.

Use the interactive version to explore, then confirm the arithmetic in a spreadsheet you control, because a rate that is quoted to a client is a commitment. The same habit of “build quickly, verify independently” applies to quotes, invoices and project estimates. The Freelancers course covers client workflows with AI.

Common misconceptions about Intelligent UI

Most confusion about Intelligent UI comes from treating it as a brand-new product when it is really a new way for an existing model to answer a question. The five misunderstandings below cause the most trouble in practice, and each one has a simple correction.

“Intelligent UI is a separate model.” It is a capability of GPT-6 in ChatGPT’s Chat tab. Paid plans use GPT-6 Sol and Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna, and the interactive answers come with them. It does not exist on older models.

“Interactive means accurate.” Interactivity is a presentation choice. OpenAI has not published validation for generated calculators, so the numbers behind a slider are only as reliable as the model’s formula. Ask to see the formula and recalculate independently.

“Choosing the Simple layout gives me plain text.” It reduces visuals, but OpenAI says “some may still appear.” The setting (Personalization → Layout and Visuals → Simple) is documented for the web.

“Paid plans and free plans get the same thing.” They get the same feature on different models, and plan limits still apply. The help article also lists thinking levels by plan, and the Pro reasoning option does not render Intelligent UI at all.

“It is the same as Claude Artifacts.” Related, not identical. Artifacts creates an object you can inspect and share beside the chat. Intelligent UI builds the answer inside the chat from OpenAI’s own components, and OpenAI has not described exporting it.

How to check an Intelligent UI calculator

You can check a generated calculator in a few minutes by treating it the way you would treat a new colleague’s spreadsheet: read the formula, test a case you already know, and push it to its edges. These steps come from the research on verifying generated formulas, adapted into a routine; they are not an OpenAI-certified method.

  1. Ask for the formula and assumptions in plain text. If it will not show them, treat the output as an illustration.
  2. Enter a case with a known answer. OpenAI’s own retirement demo of $500 a month for 30 years at 5% shows $416,129; recalculating with end-of-month deposits and monthly compounding gives $416,129.32, so it checks out under its stated assumptions.
  3. Test the edges. Zero contribution, zero interest, a price at or below cost. A good tool handles these sensibly.
  4. Recalculate in a spreadsheet you wrote. A second chatbot agreeing with the first is not a check.
  5. Keep a record of the inputs, formula and result for anything you will act on.

Privacy and data when you type numbers into an interactive answer

Intelligent UI does not change OpenAI’s data rules, so the same choices apply. On individual Free, Plus and Pro accounts, OpenAI says it “may use your content to train our models” unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Settings under Data controls. Business, Enterprise, Edu and API content is not used to improve models by default, and thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can make a whole conversation eligible even after you opt out (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).

OpenAI also says a Temporary Chat “is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary,” though it may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Nothing I found says numbers typed into a generated slider stay on your device. Build and test with made-up numbers, then use real figures only in a plan and workspace you are comfortable with. Our Temporary Chat glossary page and the AI Privacy 101 course explain the settings.

  • Reasoning Mode: the thinking levels, from Instant to Extra High, that decide whether Intelligent UI appears.
  • ChatGPT Work: OpenAI’s agent workspace, which this release does not change.
  • AI Hallucination: why a confident, polished output can still be wrong.
  • Temporary Chat: a ChatGPT mode that keeps a chat out of model training.
  • AI Usage Limits: the plan limits Intelligent UI shares rather than adds to.

The bottom line

Intelligent UI is a real step: the first time a mainstream chatbot, including its free tier, routinely answers with something you can adjust instead of only something you read. It is also a presentation layer, and the numbers behind it deserve the same scrutiny as any figure from a new source. Use it to explore quickly, ask it to show its formula, and rebuild anything you will rely on somewhere you can read the math. If you want a structured way to build that habit, FindSkill.ai’s AI Fundamentals course is a free place to start.

Frequently asked questions

What is Intelligent UI in ChatGPT? Intelligent UI is a capability of GPT-6 in ChatGPT that lets it answer with interactive screens, such as calculators, charts, forms, diagrams and small games, instead of only text. ChatGPT chooses the format for each question, and no special prompt is required.

Is Intelligent UI free? Yes, in the sense that it has no separate usage quota. OpenAI’s release note says it reaches Free and Go plans starting October 8, 2026, using GPT-6 Luna, after paid plans on October 7. Your normal plan limits still apply.

Why don’t I see interactive answers in ChatGPT? Common reasons are that your account has not been reached yet, you are on the Pro reasoning option, you use an older macOS or Windows desktop app, or ChatGPT decided plain text was the better answer. Use the web or an updated app, pick a lower thinking level, and ask a clearly visual question.

Can I turn Intelligent UI off? You can reduce it on the web: Settings, then Personalization, then Layout and Visuals, then Simple. OpenAI says this reduces visual and interactive elements, though some may still appear. Custom Instructions can also steer how ChatGPT responds.

Are the calculators ChatGPT builds accurate? Not guaranteed. OpenAI has not published validation for generated calculators, and research on AI-generated spreadsheet formulas says they cannot be assumed trustworthy. Ask for the formula and assumptions, recalculate the same inputs in a spreadsheet, and test edge cases.

Is Intelligent UI the same as Claude Artifacts? They are related but not the same. Claude Artifacts creates an editable, shareable object beside the chat, with code you can inspect. Intelligent UI shapes the answer inside the chat using a library of components OpenAI built, and OpenAI has not described exporting the result.
